Program MenRead

Use "What's on this disc" aid.
Due to popular demand I have written
this program. Thanks to K2H who
carefully typed out exactly what he
would like to see.
This program was written to satisfy a
need expressed by members with no
extra work from me required (apart
from the initial programming). The
program MenRead reads directly from
disc the DATA statements from the
program MENU in directory $ on the ADFS
and DFS versions of the 8BS magazine
disc.
It also reads in the issue number and
issue date. The result is then printed
out to display a handy hard copy of the
contents of the issue.
The menu title is displayed followed by
the load name. Also noted is whether
the item is a program or article. If
the item is an article, whether it is
in teletext or ASCII format.
When the printout is complete, the
program will wait for a keypress. You
may then insert another disc for the
menu to be printed out.
The program sends VDU codes to the
printer to switch underline on for the
menu headings. If this creates problems
for your printer, remove those lines.
They are REMmed.
This program has been tested on the DFS
and ADFS versions of issues 28 onwards
and prints the menu data out quite
well. Earlier issues will not work as
the menu was different. It will also
work on some of the TBI discs.

Use Tally numbers
This program was written for my sister
who does a lot of "cross stitch"
whatever that is. She wanted to buy 50
different coloured threads for this
hobby. To calculate which threads to
buy she asked me to write a program
that would calculate which threads were
used the most.
The program accepts input of 3 digit
numbers from 000 to 999. The maximum
occurrence of one number is 255. If the
occurrence goes to 255, the program
warns you.
SAVE and LOAD the data.
Print out the data in descending order
of occurrence.

Use Text Adventure
I came across this file on a disc sent
to me as part of the Archi collection.
In fact with a few slight modifications
and with a couple of bugs removed, the
game will run on a Master nearly as
intended, in mode 3. It will run on a
BBC in mode 7. The text on a BBC looks
a bit odd from time to time as the word
wrap isn't quite right due to the mode
change.
This game gave me a couple of hours
entertainment. It is fairly simple,
hardened adventurers should stroll
through it. Newcomers may find it
interesting.
You are stranded in a Gullwing
spaceship with a reactor meltdown in
progress. You must escape before the
whole thing blows. To compound your
problems, the escape pod appears to be
faulty.....
Program: CatRd4
Use: Printout of 8BS catalogue
Menu options: 1. Printout of pages 1,2,3,4 etc
2. Printout of pages 1,3,5,7 etc.
Pause then 2,4,6,8 etc.
3. Printout of 1 page only
Program operation: After making the selection, the program
asks you how many catalogues you wish
to print (if selection 1 or 2 has been
made).
The program then asks if you want the
catalogue to be sent to the printer. If
you answer "N", then PAGED mode is set
and you must press SHIFT to scroll the
text whenever the screen stops
scrolling.
If you answer "Y" to print out the
catalogue, then you will be asked if
you want pauses between pages. If you
choose to have a pause between pages,
this will allow you to insert single
sheets before pressing a key to
continue.
If you choose option 3, you will be
asked which page number you wish to
print out. To find out which page you
want to print out, preview the
catalogue by choosing the view option.
Choices: Option 1 will allow you to print single
sheets, turning the page each time.
Option 2 will allow you to print out to
both sides of continuous paper. This
works by printing the odd numbered
pages first all down one side. The
program then pauses and prompts you to
remove the paper, turn it around and
re-insert it. After you have pressed a
key, the program continues and prints
all the even numbered pages.
Option 3 will quite simply print out
the single page that you request.
The pause option gives you more control
over the program, you may for instance
wish to use single sheets for option
two.

The info is available from the program
by pressing R at the start or between
games. Examine the listing to see that
the printed text has been translated to
English but not the program.
Program: ArcUtil
By: K2Q
Use: 3 Utilities
Three archived utilities from K2Q.
These were sent without documentation.
They will need adapting to suit your
needs. You will need to examine the
programs and decide what needs doing.
I have included them on this issue
because I liked the presentation and it
should give someone an idea for an
improvement/update.
The programs are:
Control. A file loader
Date. A datafile for Control.
Loader. * commands from a program.
Printer. A letterhead printer.
The programs appear to require a twin
drive but could be adapted easily.
To view the files you will need to use
the dearchiver "DeArc" provided on this
disc. Copy ArcUtil and DeArc onto a
blank disc. Run DeArc. Enter the drive
number that you are using. Press "D" to
decompress. Answer ArcUtil to the
question "file to decompress". After a
short while there will be 4 extra
programs on the disc.
