When you are writing much and have
reached the end of the page you might
get the 'can't extend' error and you
have lost all of your data. Not any
possible way to load it back!
So always make a copy of your !Mesg
file.
This error is not because the disc is
full, tried it on an empty disk and
got the same.
When going to use the message system I
often think it would be a lot easier
when I could choose the disc on which
I want to store the DATA.
I have tried to find the possible
lines in which I could change to this
option - found some but not all.
Can you do it, Steven?

All you hear these days in the
computer world are words like MODEM,
INTERNET, WORLD WIDE WEB, ISDN etc.
But what do us beeb users have in this
area?
OK, there was Prestel which seemed a
bit like the World Wide Web and there
are still BBS systems around the
globe.
Does 8BS have a BBS system? If so,
could someone please tell me about it.
If not, why not?
What is the latest equipment to be
using for the beeb and modems? Which
modem, and which software?
If 8BS does not have a BBS then I
would be interested in starting one.
Is all we need is the ability to
download each issue of 8BS and have
some kind of E-Mail facility.
Can anybody recommend how to get
started? Is anybody interested? I have
a BBC Model B connected to a 100Mb
FileStore (Econet) and a modem, from
which I could possibly run such a
service. What server software?
If you're interested, contact me. If
you want a reply, please enclose a
stamp and address label. An envelope
is not necessary.

Subject: WATFORD ELECTRONICS
I have just read the letter by K7X about
his problems with the above company.
It seems that everyone I have met who
has had dealings with them has
encounterd the same problems. Goods
either faulty or not up to advertised
specification, and you simply end up
with a phone bill if you try to
complain.
I bought a twin 3 1/2" disk drive from
them. I was told it would be a CUMANA
- a company I respect. It was not a
CUMANA, and has never worked properly,
wrecking many programmes, and wasting
uncountable hours of collected research
data.
I have sent it back to them many times,
but they simply return it saying its OK.
A friend of mine
has a handicapped daughter. They got a
special grant to buy her an Archimedes
with touch screen and special software
for disabled. But it all had to be
purchased from the cheapest supplier.
That meant WATFORD. It seems they were
sent an old model of the Archi, which
does not run the software and has been
almost totally useless. They have
gone back to the old BBC for all their
word processing.
I contacted the Trading Standards
people at WATFORD and they told me that
they have a file of complaints from
customers so big that it would not be
worth taking action. I would like to
here from anyone else who has had
problems with WATFORD ELECTRONICS.
There is a need for a united action.

EDITOR...... I have never used
Watfraud. I did however put a member on
to them for a lead. He had nothing but
trouble trying to get them to send it to
him. They cashed his cheque and waited
MONTHS to send the lead. I will never
recommend them to any one ever again. It
took months. I would not deal with them
if they were the last supplier on earth,
I would sooner go without.
Thanks for the offer John, I am sure the
response to your request is going to
keep you busy!

As a 3 months new member, 70 year old
member I thought I had better
introduce myself.
When I retired 10 years ago I bought
Acorn BEEB's for myself and
subsequently for my grandchildren. I
use the BEEB for WP & database work,
they use it for school work as well as
games.
In 1986 I joined an Acorn User Club -
North And Mid-Essex BBC micro User
Group (NAMEBUG) which meets in Witham.
In 1988 I found myself on the
Committee and as Secretary/News Letter
Editor the following year. Two years
later I gave up the Editorship when my
9-pin printer was not really up to the
image set by members' ink-jet/laser
printers.
NAMEBUG meets twice a month in Witham
Library. Whilst about 4 of us, the
older generation, are still happy with
their BEEBs, the majority of our
members (20 odd) have Archimedes or
RISC PCs and the 2 hour meetings are
usually spent demonstrating and
discussing the latest Acorn
developments.
If you know of anyone in Essex who
might be interested in Acorn machines
they can meet us in Witham Library
(7.45-9.45pm) on the 2nd Thursday or
4th Wednesday of a month except from
15th July to 1st September when we
shut down for the Summer.
As my BEEB is fitted with Solidisk
products I joined SOLINET in 1987 and
over the years the co-ordinators and
members have been a great help to me.
I now look forward to membership of
8BS.
Best wishes to all for 1995.

Subject: 512
I have recently joined the 512 owners
'club', nothing special about that,
well there is for me because it will
be the nearest I come to owning an
IBM!
The PD library has around 26 discs and
at one pound each post paid all are of
good value. The discs are specifically
for the 512, however, there are a good
number of discs that will run on the
512 that were produced for other
computers.
EDITOR........ There are 40 512 Discs
in the 8BS 512 section now, with more
flooding in!
Why bother telling everybody, well
when I saw the price in issue 42 of
the 512 for sale thought those who
don't know, the original price could
have been 400 pounds!
What can it do my Master can't already
do, altogether now, run IBM programs!
Well when a program has its own 90
page manual incorporated, nuf sed! The
programs are the same of course only
much larger.
My point of view is distinctly one-
sided. You will have to ask the 'real'
officiandos what the overall verdict
is. At the moment its eyes stuck out
like chapel hat pegs, and mouth open
time wondering what's coming next!
By the way if anyone does have any 512
discs to dispose of please let me know
I may not have got them!

in the HELP! section for an

exhibiting NOSCROLL despite
the user having CONFIGURED
SCROLL beforehand.
I was very surprised to see the above
piece. I remember having written it
more than a year and a half ago. I
also remember not sending it in as I
found an explanation in Hints and Tips
2 in the ADFS Extra section of the
8-BS Magazine No.31. Item No.188
explains that it is the Desktop which
re-configures the computer NOSCROLL
after the poor user has taken the
trouble to configure it SCROLL! No.188
gives a way out of the problem. For
the Master or the A-3000 insert a line
in the program:
VDU23,16|
if you wish the computer to behave
like a BBC i.e. SCROLL.
VDU23,16,1| will give NOSCROLL.
The | character is obtained by
SHIFTING the key below and to the
right of the BREAK key on The Master
or the key above and to the right of
the RETURN key on the A-3000.
Our painstaking Editor knows only too
well of my propensity for putting the
wrong items in packets for the post!
That un-sent submission must have been
lurking about for 18 months waiting
for its moment of glory when I
mistakenly sent it off to Hull.

On the 11th of May my friend and I
visited a B.B.C.user group in Witham
Essex, A friend had told us about the
group and that he had been a member
some time ago but was not sure if it
wa still running.
Well I am pleased to say it is alive
and well and living in Witham public
library twice a month.
Although the group is into greater
ACORNS now there are still members
running B.B.C.s and there is a wealth
of help and advice to be had from all
the members we met.
Although we are relative newcomers to
computing we were made to feel welcolme
and there is still a good deal of
interest in the old B.B.C.there.
So if you are looking for a friendly
Acorn user group in Essex I can
recommend NAMEBUG (North and Mid Essex

Subject: Z80 Software
I have an Acorn Z80 2nd proc and the
original disks for it for CPM. I also
have various Z80 programs in my PD
library including a program to convert
BBCBASIC-Z80 to use standard BBC-OS
calls for I/O instead of CPM.
The Acorn Z80 is better than the Torch
one in that it provides a full OS entry
block. The Torch only provides OSWRCH,
OSRDCH, OSBYTE and OSWORD.
Did anyone know that the Amstrad NC100,
NC150 and NC200 have BBCBASIC-Z80 built
in? Handy. Unfortunatly, Amstrad no
longer sell through dealers, so I can't
get my hands on one to play with to
decide whether and which to buy.
I have some Z80-based disks in my
library. The only problem preventing
expansion is the question of how to
distibute them. Z88... ramcard?
NC100.. different ramcard. NC200 has a
disk drive with which it can access DOS
format disks.
